MF 290 Diesel Smoker Part Deux

Well guys it looks like my 290 has some issues far beyond merely dirty injectors or a dirty filter. While the Perkins has always been a smoker today the smoke just became flat out ridiculous. Upon inspection I can see oil coming out of my exhaust manifold which obviously cannot be good. Are we talking piston rings? Head work needed? Is this a major job?

Sure sounds like broken, or collapsed ring(s) which usually causes some damage to the cylinder wall(s), and piston(s). Has ether (starting fluid) been used on this engine to start it when it's cold? You can do an in-frame engine rebuild if you are not experiencing oil pressure problems. A in-frame is major, but not as major compared to a rebuild where you have to split the tractor if the crankshaft needs machining.

Since no starting fluid was used is a good thing as it can really beat up an engine, especially a diesel if it's overused. Starting fluid detonates at around a 5 to 1 compression ratio, diesels have at least 16 to 1, or more compression ratio. You should only need to do a in-frame re-build (new sleeves, pistons, rings, etc).

The in-frame kit should be somewhere around $500.00 unless you find something else wrong when you get it apart. If you have to have a shop do the re-build for you the cost of that really depends on what shop you use.

In my experience, excessively worn or broken rings make a diesel start really hard because of a lack of compression, especially 'cold'. Oil in the exhaust is more a sign of badly worn exhaust valve guides, or as a more remote possibly, a leaky head gasket.

I have 2 'smokers' with that problem. The gasser having a hotter exhaust burns the exhaust valve oil and makes blue smoke. That motor has a freeze cracked (and patched) block and isn't worth rebuilding, even though it still runs ok. The diesel, unless worked really hard to make the exhaust hot, tends to just push oil out the exhaust. And it starts even at 15F without a block heater. Rings? I'm sure they could use replacement when the head gets done, but they're not likely the main contributor to that amount of oil.
