MF 135 AG3.152 Starter Solenoid Replacement

Hello,

I need to replace the starter solenoid on my Perkins AG3.152 3 cyl engine. Can the solenoid be replaced with the starter left attached to the engine? I see there are two phillips head screws.

The is a lead at the end that projects out of the starter. It is attached to one of the solenoid studs. Do I simply bend that lead/tab out of the way and pull the solenoid forward, away from the mount casting ? Thank you

Is there anything else I have to remove to replace the solenoid ?

If it's like other Delco solenoids it can be replaced after the screws are out, strap terminal loose, then twist the solenoid to release the lower tab from the groove it sets in. The starter strap will clear then also with no bending. Most can be fixed though just by turning the top bat post bolt 1/2 turn after the nuts are off. push the bolt in, turn, and pull back out to feel the square head enter the cap square hole again. The bolt end wears away over time and the large contact washer can't complete the circuit. Turning the bolt places the unworn head in play as the washer only hits part of the bolt head.

I have silver soldered a penny on the end of the one large copper bolt head then filed it down and fixed mine. worked for several years after that! years ago they use to sell a rebuild kit for solenoids not sure any more. like Dieseltech said they sould come off easy as long as you can get both screws off!

I've fixed many car starters with the 180 degree turn. For those trying to imagine, it looks like a capital "D" instead of what it should look, an "o".

Thanks for everyone's responses. This is a great site for newbees like myself. I will be working on my MF 135 sometime this week when I get the time.

I inherited it from my brother and trying to get it back going again. Teaching my neightbor's son on engine and hydraulic repair, and general maintenance on this old lady. I can't get over how well built these machines are!
