MF85....could use some help and info..

Today I was able to find time to look over my dad's MF85. It has been sitting for around 30 years. Expecting that the engine would be seized, last winter I poured some ATF into the cylinders and let it sit. Today I removed the starter and used a prybar on the ring gear, and the engine turned smooth and freely. I removed the gas tank, drained the old gas, and opened up the tappet cover. The valves seem to open and close smoothly, I could not see that any were sticking.

The good: engine not seized, valves not sticking. I opened up the little plate that covers the transmission, it's still full of fluid and looks new and clean like it just came of assembly line. Clutch lever and brake levers seem to be moving freely.

The bad: steering gear seized right below the steering wheel, gearshift lever stuck in neutral. I removed the plate that houses the gearshift and the little lever next to it (PTO?) they're both stuck. It was pretty rusty underneath, I sprayed PBlaster on it. The lever next to the steering wheel (is it the throttle?) is stuck too.

I could use advice to deal with these issues. I've worked a little on a Farmall B, but a lot of the things on this Massey I don't even know what they are yet. As of yet I have no service manual and don't know if I can find one, things seem to be pretty rare for this tractor. Some of the part numbers on the rear of the tractor say Canada on them.

Also, I can't find a serial number anywhere. The little plate on the right side below the steering is gone, and I could not find anything on the battery box. The only numbers I found were stamped on the engine block: E223A-600 CWC J298. Any ideas?

Here's a pic of the tractor before I dragged it out of the weeds:

It sounds like you might have water in the transmission. Since water is heavier it sits on the bottom & you won't see it from above. Try removing the 3 transmission drain plugs & see if water comes out. You could have gallons of water in there and it could rust the lower shafts, gears & both pumps. If that were the case the transmission would be very expensive to fix.

30 years? gees I'm surprised it would roll. You will
have to deal with each issue one at a time such as
freeing up the throttle etc. Looks like a great
project, must be in a dry climate.

Yep.. drained the transmission and about a gallon of water came out before trans fluid started draining. How do I gain access to the transmission to inspect the damage?

On the right side of the tractor ( when sitting on it ) are two places to access the transmission. First one is below the battery and has the PTO pump mounted to it. I think there are 8 bolts. The second place is by the dipstick. I think this one has 6 bolts. You should be able to see most of the gears and shafts from these two places. Good luck!

Oh yeah. Since this one has the 223 in it it would be an early 85. Massey switched to the 242 in the later 85s.

Thanks so much. From what I can tell, the numbers J298 on the block tell the year. J is for October. 29 is the day of the month, and 8 is the end of the year it was made. So Oct. 29, 1958.
