Massey 231 with a 3 cylinder Perkins engine. Will start and run
for a couple minutes then die. After sitting for a few minutes
will do the same thing . What's up with it?

What controls fuel to the engine????

If fuel is not cut off the engine would run forever!!

Is there a fuel shut off switch? Is the ignition switch getting hot.

While engine is running, can you shut the engine off using normal shutdown procedures.

You must find out what is shutting down the fuel to the engine.

Is the air filter clean, no rat nest build up stopping air flow.

Let us know what you find

How old is the fuel, any water in the fuel?

What make and number filter did you use? If NAPA/WIX 3166 make sure the filter top inlet groove is open. Have made service calls to find it has an extra O ring in the groove restricting the fuel flow. Not a problem with CAV filters. Worth a look.

We had the same thing happen with a 168, it turned out to be the fuel tank's cap not venting properly when the engine cuts out open the tank, with ours you could literally hear the air rushing in when you loosened the cap. OR it might even be that the gauze fuel filter in the tank is partially blocked.

Mine did the same thing. I finally found the petcock on the bottom of the fuel tank was plugged. Drove me nuts trying to figure it out. Someone on here told me to check it.

This 231 is about to drive me nuts. Started today and ran for 15 minutes. Then it idled down like I was shutting down the throttle and died. Wouldn't restart. I'm at my wits end.

Well guys I finally got back to work on the 231. Started at the tank and started tracing fuel. Fuel flowed out of tank line fine into the lift pump but would not come out of the pump when
I pumped it manually. Bout the new pump for $33.00 and 15 minutes later tractor was running like a champ. Worked it for an hour and a half to make sure. Life is good again!

Thanks for all the help I sure do appreciate it.
