Massey Ferguson 35 Diesel won't start

A friend of mine has a 35 that he was running out in the field pulling a 2 bottom plow and came up into the yard and shut the tractor down went into the house to eat and came out and the engine fired up but didn't sound right. He shut it down and now it will not start. Yes it has fuel to the two bleeders on the injection pump. He said that since it failed to start the engine cranks over slower than it used to. I took the oil bath air cleaner apart and found a mouse nest and cleaned it all out thinking that it wasn't getting enough air. We have tried pulling it around the yard but it will not even pop. Does anybody have any ideas to look for or any testing I could do???

A diesel need three thing to get started, fuel, compression and a good battery to crank it over. Do you have fuel to the injectors when you crank it? Crack open the connection at the injectors and see if you have fuel. If you do, then I"d suspect you have a problem with compression. If you have fuel don"t you better reprime the whole fuel system.

I might point out that clean air cleaners are very important to diesel engines. A dirty air cleaner will cause the fuel air ratio to rise and thus increase the peak temperature in the cylinder. The piston crown can only take so much temperature before it"s damaged. Dirty air cleaners also limit power by reducing the airflow. Higher temperatures and lower power are obvuiously not the way to go. Keep those air cleaners squeaky clean.

This web site is great. There is another posting with the same problem and one of the readers said to check the shutoff linkage at the injecter pump and check for reisitance without the linkage hooked up. Yes, this one there is no resistance and I also checked for fuel at the injectors and got nothing. So I am looking to have the pump checked out/rebuilt. Thanks guy for the info

Hi,

I know this is a very old post but I'm keen to learn what the problem was with this tractor as I have one that is displaying the same symptoms.

If anyone can help out with an answer I'd really appreciate it.

No oil in coolant. No coolant in oil. Engine turns over slowly and when I spray some ether into inlet it stops turning over altogether. Turns over slowly and 'chuffs' and just won't start.

Thanks

I suppose I am going to catch all sorts of flack for this, as always, but a shot of starting fluid is a cheap and easy first bet. It might have a leak in the lines that let it get airbound- could be something else, filters too dirty- who knows without tearing into it, but if it fires on the ether, then at least you narrowed it down to fuel. Good luck.

Pull the injectors out put about 5-10 cc's of motor oil in each cylinder, put the injectors back in, and crank it over. If it will run for a few seconds then quit, do a compression test. The oil will help seal the piston rings, and the engine will run on the motor oil until it burns the oil out of the cylinders.
