I am starting some repairs on my mf175. I was check out a hyd lift problem and found something as I was looking inside the right side inspection panel. Looking straight in and to the left, down a bit, there is obviously part of the pto that spins. It has one thin disk on a rotating drum it looks like. When the tractors running it is ticking and knocking on the rotating drum. I know it is part of the PTO. Which is spinning all the time. Anyway, whats going on in there? I am waiting on my manual so I can get to this lift thing, and I will fix pto also. Hope I dont have split this thing to fix it. Any thoughts or advice?

Hello, you have not confirmed whether your tractor has a mechanical or independant PTO. From your post it looks like an IPTO unit. If you have a disc rattling around it might well be the end disc from the IPTO drum. The circlip will have come out and allowed the disc to come out.
If you have a mechanical PTO it is quite possible that the flange on the RH side of the selector coupling (Fig 2) has broken away from the rest of the coupling. It is not a frequent problem but does occur. They are however very different in size. The IPTO disc is about 6 inches in diameter and the coupling flange about 3 inches.
In answer to your other posting about removing the cover; Have you removed the roller from the top end of the pump lever? This is ABSOLUTELY essential. Have you removed the stack-pipe? This is the tube that goes from the cap on the front of the cover down and engages in the pump body. If your tractor has Pressure Control you will only be able to lift the tube upwards by about one inch to disengage it from the pump. The cover needs to be moved rearwards slightly and can then be lifted upwards carefully.
In answer to your last question; If it is an IPTO tractor and the pump or IPTO requires repair you WILL need to split it between the rear of the gearbox and centre casing to be able to remove the pump/IPTO assembly.
Let us know how you get on.

i am not really sure which one it is. It has never worked right. The pto spins all the time, but when you engage the pto lever on the left side it really gets to spinning. It looks like a break disk, and it is on the forward end of drum. As the drum turns it is spinning and cacthing on the cut outs on the drum. I have just had this tractor to myself for a year. Its been in the family for 20 years. Never ran right so since the lift quit working I am going to start restoring itto a better mechanical state. I am unfamilar with the internal workings of this tractor. But I am a mechanic on airplanes. I am going to pull the hyd top off today though. I beleive it has a bent or broken linkage inturnaly. I am just waiting on my manual

Thanks, this gonna be a fun project! I love this old tractor, it runs real good. And no computers to fool with!

my manual is on the way! I am finally understanding how this pto works. That disk is supposed to be connected to the drum, which the disk is the break. Which stops the pto. Got it! Well, the disk is just rattleing around on the drum but still in the caliper. And chattering away while running.

The brake disc rides in notchs machined into the drum edge with roll pins holding it on as it spins inside the PTO brake cylinder. Hope your drum is good, had to buy one for a 165 awhile back as the drum snap ring groove broke away at the retaining piston. Was 1200.00 at the time, think they are less now. Good luck!
