Coolant or Antifreeze in an A3.152 engine

Pre winter question here.

I have just had to change a core cap on my Massey 135. I have just filled the cooling system back up with water for now but want to get some antifreeze back in as soon as possible.

I have read various things about cavitation in diesel engines and now need some advice. My local Agri dealer said just use standard car coolant stuff, but having read al sorts on the web, I have no idea of what to do.

Im in the UK, if anyone can advice on specific products I'd be very grateful.

Thanks.

Hello,
I don't think that you need have any worries about cavitation. It will depend on where you are in the UK and where your tractor is housed in relation to the prevailing wind if in a lean-to for example. Our temperatures in South Wales are normally down to about -3 to -5 degrees when we do get frost. Of course it can go down a lot more as it did about 5 years ago. I would only use an ethylene glycol antifreeze in my own and customers tractors diluted to 33%. Probably 25% would be completely safe but I would rather have a margin which will allow for topping up if plain water has to be used. Also in the event of our weather turning 'extreme' it will still be safe. The capacity of the 35/135 is approximately 2.25 uk gals. A 33% mix would require approx 5 to 5 1/2 pints.
Hope this helps.

Yes David is right, err on the side of caution, we just never know do we? I remember here in S. Yorkshire it got down to -15c one night during that last bad winter of 2010-11, the last time I saw temps anywhere near that was 1979 I think!

Thanks for the advice chaps. I noticed that Agriline sell anti freeze, I assume this would be the stuff David P suggests?!

David,
Thanks for the reply, is there a particular brand you suggest in the UK. It seem harder than I thought to find some!

Thanks

Richard
