Massey 2745 blown engine - what's it worth?

Hi all,

My brother has a 2745 that is suffering from major blow-by. No power.
He just moved 6 hrs away and I'm trying to convince him to sell it rather than haul it with him and fix it. He doesn't have internet access yet so that is why I'm asking for him.

The hour meter shows 3100 hrs.

The transmission has worked fine.

He says he was told by a 3rd party that it has most of the latest and greatest options that were designed for that tractor. He thinks it's a later model. (I don't know the serial #)

The tires are decent. The front treads are separating from the tire.

The front weights may not be included in the sale. It has the giant ~500lb rear weights inside the rear wheels.

Duals also may not be included.

I would really appreciate a value estimate!

Thanks!

If the rear tires are matched pairs they are worth more than the rest of it. There is one for sale here local that has the 8 speed trans, and bad engine, for 3500. If it has the 24 speed, $135/ ton or whatever scrap is bringing in you area. Weighs close to 10 ton.

How much blow by are we talking? When you say no power, I look at it and the fuel filters are rusty! That tells me they have not been changed in a while, probably the air filters either. That old of filters would make it not have power! Hate to see a tractor go over that. Bought a Case 1175 once, the owner said it didn't have power to pull a hill by its self. I looked at the filters and they had the old Case name on them, changed them and like a brand new tractor.

I agree with Tom, do alittle more homework before you jump to conclusions. I'd change fuel filters, change air filters, clean your crankcase vent screen, if your running bio diesel and tractor has sat outside in sun much you may have algae starting to form and plugging fuel line?.....throw some algae destroyer and lucas fuel treatment or sea foam fuel treatment in tank....possibly dirty injectors or fuel pump.....if still no good then do a compression test just to see what you have there. How many hours on tractor? All 540 engines will have alittle blow by out the vent tube just by nature. Does it slobber oil out the exhaust manifolds after sitting idle for awhile?
You have lots of things to check and do before declaring it a total loss and scrapping it out! Let us know the results of your find. Good luck Luke

Thanks for trying to help guys.

My brother has been a professional mechanic for AGCO/Challenger for years now so I have to believe he has that part covered.

It does have a working 24 speed.

He bought the tractor in the spring right before I took the picture you see above.
He changed all filters and performed all regular maintenance before using it all summer. The tractor had plenty of power when disking.

There is no injector slobber.

The last time my brother used it (I think he was baling) he said he noticed that the blow by was getting noticeably worse, enough to concern him. He said he remembers wondering how much longer it was going to be working for him.

Dad used it last to run a grain vac and he said it was pouring out black smoke through the blow by and couldn't run the vac anymore.

My brother said the guy he bought it from had it turned it up some so it might have been getting too much fuel, but it never rolled coal when under power which of course is one indication of too much fuel.

We are pretty positive there is at least one scored cylinder or a hole burned somewhere.

Thanks everyone for the input!
Feel free to add more thoughts.

I think he should fix it since he's a AGCO/Challenger mechanic (he should be able to do it in his sleep). It would probably be a lot cheaper than buying another tractor that could have a lot worse issues than that one.

As I mentioned previously, my brother has moved 6 hrs away. The tractor is 6 hrs away from him. He took an opportunity to buy into a large farm and work there. He has no need for this tractor or any personally owned tractor for that matter. All equipment he needs is there already. He could fix it, but it doesn't make sense to pay $1000 shipping and drop 5k of parts into it when it was only work 5 grand to begin with. That is why we think it is best to sell it as it is.

Ok. A good running 2745 are in the $12,000 - $17,000 range after looking on tractor house. They also have one listed for $6500 but it's missing the door on the cab, has singles in the rear, the hours are unknown, but for $6500 there must be something else wrong with it for that price.

He only paid $5000 for this one when it was working. I think tractor house is usually on the high end for price.

Tractor house is mainly dealers, for $5000 he practically stole it (unless who he bought if from knew it was on barrowed time). Anyways if it all works good except for the engine, and if the engine has enough power to move the tractor like to load it on a trailer. I'd try for $6500 then negotiate on the price some, you never now, someone may give you $6500 as it sits (you never know).

I suspect the previous owner had an idea it was near the end of its rope.

Your optimism on value should cheer up my brother! :)
