mf 165 power steering pump

I have a new power steering pump I just installed on my tractor that's getting pretty hot and sometimes it loses power steering when I have to turn fast and a lot. I have the fluid up to filler plug. My question is there are two scribe marks on the reservoir and one on the pump. Right now the top mark on reservoir is lined up. Should the bottom one be lined up or in the middle? I figured if you lined the bottom scribe mark then it would hold more fluid. Any help appreciated. Thanks

Hello Josh,
Your PAS pump should look something similar to the one below. It may not have a breather on the top. Your filler should be where the one is in the photo. When you check the oil level the steering should be on full left hand lock. This is when the steering rod is withdrawn into the cylinder. If the level is checked with the rod fully extended the oil capacity is increased but then the reservoir will try to overfill and may force oil out somewhere especially as it expands.
You may have a new pump but have you checked the filter in it? Normally this type of pump will run hot when the filter is blocked/partially blocked. Are you using the correct type of oil?
For UK 100 series tractors automatic transmission fluid is recommended but I believe a different type is recommended for the States.

I am using type A transmission fluid. My plug is close to the same place as yours. I rechecked fluid level and when I turn steering wheel to left it pushes fluid out. I done this several times and the fluid got low enough to where it was hard to turn. So I ended up turning the steering wheel to right and refilling to plug but the ram cylinder shaft would be extended this way. How hot should the pump actually get? I felt mine yesterday and its hot enough to only hold hand on for a few seconds. I also posted a photo of the scribe marks on pump. Thanks

I have one fill plug at 9:00 and 2 at 10:30 all steer just okay. We put a new pump on years ago and plugged the new filter real fast. We were told my our MF dealer to use the same fluid as the lift. I have not touched a pump but would think it would be to hot to hold.
