H277 Head vs H260?

Tearing down the continental H277 engine on my 1956
Massey Harris 444, to find the head is off a earlier H260 with
a casting date of may 1950. I do have a parts tractor with a
H277 head, but the valves and guides are in bad shape.
What's the differences between the two heads? Will there be
a performance change? Thanks,
Russ

The H277 head is 1/8 inch shorter in the combustion chamber and has 1/8 inch shorter push rods. The casting around the intake valves is relieved some making the head flow a slight bit more air. It might make a little more compression, 5 to 10 psi. I have swapped them back and forth but like to keep the right push rods with them, there is enough adjustment in the rockers to use any of them though. I don't think you would notice much if any performance difference. When using make sure the head bolt studs are seated all the way in so the nuts don't bottom on the threads before they reach torque, or maybe add another washer.
