We just bought a well used MF 135 that is missing it's serial plate. The engine is a Z134 with serial number Z134 748264. I was hoping someone could point me in the right directon to find the year via the engine serial number.

Thanks for you help!

From the Ferguson Tractor (FENA) website; Technical Tips; Tractor ID:

"Casting codes on engines, transmissions, differential housings and rear axles often follow a particular format, usually with a letter of the alphabet representing a particualr month, a one or two digit number for the day of the month, and a one digit number for the year of the decade. The letter "I" (India) is not used to avoid confusion from misidentification. Thus A = Jan; J = Sept; M = Dec....."

The right side of the transmission housing on my 135 has a casting code of [b:e6bcd7b854]F 22 3[/b:e6bcd7b854], which deciphers to June 22, 1973. My tractor was probably assembled and shipped to a dealer within two months of that date.

If your tractor is a 1964 or 1965 then it could be mistaken as a 1974 or 1975, if going by casting codes, since the codes did not incorporate a digit for the decade. In such a case you would need to learn some early and late 135 features and use them to catagorize your 135 to its correct decade. Alternator or generator equipped would be one example. Perhaps it was originally a generator tractor and has been converted to alternator; does it have a factory alternator bracket or an improvised bracket? Has the wiring harness been altered? You may have to do a little detective work. Hope this helps.

Z134 is a four cylinder, Wasn't mid year 1967 the
end of the 4 cylinders? The 134 engine was in the
135 special. I'm not sure about the special, but
after mid year of 67, I think, the gassers were 3
cyl. perkins.

At the end of the production run, the Perkins plant could barely keep pace with the demand for the 153 diesels. 4-cylinder Continentals started re-appearing in 135's sold in the North American market. It was the Z145 though, IIRC
