Massey 44 shift boot and engine oil fill

Can a person take off and install the shift tower without removing the fuel tank or will the pto fork stop you from doing this. Also are the shift lever boots any better from agco or any aftermarket ones do? Driving down the road oil is working its way out of the bottom of the boot. And finally is there a baffle of some sort on the engine oil fill cap? There is what looks like an oring in between the two washers on the fill cap but to small to do any good. First older massey that I am working on, so be easy on me. thanks chris

I usually have the tank off when I'm getting into them that deep, you would have to try it and see. On the shift lever boots the last few I have bought aftermarket only last a couple of years before they start to crack, I have no idea if AGCO would supply them or not. I have never had oil come out from the boot, but have seen oil leak around the shifter cover due to a bad gasket. On the engine oil fill some have that baffel thing and some don't, they all leak some around those course threads and make a mess, tighten that cap with a channel lock or it will vibrate loose and will be lost, it is just a standard pipe cap, good luck with your project.

I have seen a piece of leather in between the two baffle pieces. Not sure if it really helped or not, but cant hurt. That cap gets a lot of oil spray from the timing gears. A wrap of teflon tape helps some, but doesn't last if you're in there very often...

I would just pull the tank to get to the shifter. You will want to make sure it is out of fuel, or it gets real heavy.

I have the same questions as you on the oil filler. It looks to me like there was leather in there originally. I wrap some teflon tape on the threads, It will leak oil out if you do nothing.

Thanks for the info. I'm going to do a little trial and error, looked at the fill cap and seen that the outside washer was soldered on so melted the solder away and looks like a leather or thick gasket material washer, going to use a rubber washer from another brand of tractor and see what I can make. Cleaned up around the shifter and just pulled the lever out cleaned up and then put a shim washer between the snap ring and retaining collar for the shift lever, Boot from agco is $25 compared to steiner of $10, not sure what way to go. The main reason I wanted to pull the cover was to reseal the pto and see now that the seal is on the outside so won't be pulling the cover. chris
