massey 65 question...

Guys I have been working on this 1963 model 65 for almost a year.... fixing leaks new hydraulics, rebuilding almost every part of it. SO I take her out of the barn yesterday ( by the way she runs like a top) and I get this clanking sound from the right rear axle. The noise is coming from the outer part near the rim. If your running on smooth ground, it's quiet but, if you hit a bump or rough ground it makes this clank. I have confirmed it's nothing hitting the fender or anything.... I scared to death it's the planetary s. That side does have a lot of end play. When you shake the tire it moves in and out too much..... HELP what else could it be?

Probably the brakes on that side/ but if you have a lot of play there when you shake the wheel, you'd best be replacing those bearings in the planetary, especially if you get that rattle or knock going around a corner.

Not a terrible job. Easier if you have access to a press.

If the play is only axial (in and out) you might get away with only shimming the bearings. If the wheel moves back and forth when you grab the top and shake, your bearings need a look. Depending on whether you have the new or old type, you can jsut replace the rollers. The entire bearing assy is pretty salty IIRC.

The play is "in and out" when it makes the noise, it sounds like taking a hammer and "lightly" taping the fender or something like thin metal in a regular rhythm. A "clank". It's not a loose lug.
crap! this wasn't something I was wanting to have to deal with....lol I thought I was almost done. I guess I'll just take it back apart and see........ Thanks

Well after taking the planetary off that side.... I grabbed the axle (the gear) and turned it back and forth. Still made the noise. As it turns out, Our Farmer was correct.... it's the brakes. As the axle turns, something is hitting some part of the brakes that makes the operating linkage move. If I loosen the adjusting nut way out and push in on the rod it gets quiet as a mouse.
I did change the brakes on that side while the trumpet was off (was leaking) evidently I did something wrong although I can't imagine how. Maybe I have it flipped??
