MF50 Perkins Diesel Head Gasket Question

Got my fine MF50 diesel back from the head gasket being repaired - yippie!!!!!

However, the mechanic said when I asked, he did not bring the engine up to temperature and then re-torque the head.

For what ever reason, I thought this was standard procedure, but the mechanic pointed to the MF factory manual and it is silent on warm-up/re-torque.

Question is - should this be done?

It is a 3 cylinder 152 cu in Perkins.

Thanks!
Bill

When I worked at the MF dealer we always warmed all engines up and retorqued the head hardware, gas and diesel engines both. There are some gaskets that don't need retorquing. What you might try is when it is warmed up test the hardware outside the valve cover, if none have lost torque, no problem. If they have lost some tension I would pull the valve cover and redo all. We had a small nurse fuel tank to run the engines just for this job. With the cooling system full I remove the fan belt so the water pump does not work, warms up to 190 degrees faster that way.

Sometimes too it can even depend on the type of replacement head gasket used. For example, the older head gaskets that were basically just a thin piece of copper usually required a re-torque after running the engine some.

That said, FelPro and other manufacturers came out with better head gasket designs that are called "Perma-torque". Usually any Felpro head gasket that has PT in the part number stands for perma-torque and they typically do not need to be retorqued (although there are likely exceptions).

Basically these PT gaskets use a metal compression ring around the perimeter of the cylinder similar in design to a spark plug compression gasket.

Thanks much for the info!!!!!!! To be on the safe side, I'll be retorqing the head before we give it a workout. I want it to be right from the get go. I appreciate the mechanic's work, but don't see this tractor going back to him anytime soon, so we'll finish the job ourselves.

Thanks again,
Bill
