I did the points and plugs on the MH30 and got it
to run. Not bad for having sat for fifteen years.
The engine sounds good-- it runs well and has
plenty of power. It seems to be running hot but I
may have it adjusted a little lean. It's a nice
little tractor. It does seem to have a knock in
the transmission-- as if someone is counting to
four--- There was quite a bit of water in the
rear end. I'm going to change the gear oil- I'm
assuming 90 weight gear oil would be OK? The
knock is worst in first gear. I haven't worked on
transmissions on these tractors-- does it sound
like that will be in my near future?

It sounds like there is a gear in the transmission with a tooth broken off. I have a 33 Standard that has a tooth off of 4th gear and it sounds the way you are describing. Use 140 weight gear oil as todays 90 weight is very thin, about like motor oil.
