Massey 285 tractor......any good????

MF rules

Thinking about buying a MF 285 with factory cab and multipower. Main use for this tractor will be running grain augers, 7 ft bush hog 3 pt mower and possibly 15 ft batwing mower. Here's my questions:
1. What engine they use in a MF 285? What's max pto horespower?
2. Are these engines prone to head gasket problems when worked hard? First ditch mowing with batwing in spring is pretty hard cutting and will make even an 100 horespower tractor work!
3. Were the MF 285 available in 1000 rpm and 540 rpm pto? Can u just unbolt and change shafts out from one or the other?
5. Any other weak points on these tractors.....will probably be putting around 150-200 hrs a year on it.
6. Did these MF 285's have enough cooling capacity that even on an 90 degree day with 70% humidity it will run cool while pulling hard?
Thanks!

Dad's had our 285 since the early 80's. It's got the 318 that had been known to have head gasket issues. That said, ours has never blown a head gasket with over 7000 hours on it.

The 1000 rpm shaft, if you can find one, is a bolt on swap. You need the cast housing that is shorter than the 540 housing, the shaft, and a bearing.

It's only an 80-85 hp tractor, so expecting it to hold up to the demands of a 100 hp tractor is asking for trouble. That said, it was our big tractor for years and it
performed quite well for us. Just want good with a plow.

As far as using a brush hog, be cautious to make sure there is an ORC on it. Not because it'll keep moving forward, but because you'll fry the pto brake, just like
we did running a silo blower.

As far as cooling, as long as the radiator is clean, and the fan belt is tight it's never been an issue. Right now it actually seems to run cool, even after replacing the thermostat.

Our's has been a good tractor. The 318 has real good low rpm torque. At 6500 hours it is getting a little tired and could use a freshen up on the engine.

It has worked hard on our farm. Have not had the head gasket problem. Only a clutch or two.

As Don mentioned, and I have read before it is tempting to treat a 285 like a small big tractor when what it is is a big mid size tractor.

punch in tractordata.com and will tell ya all the specs etc and some pics. Same as a 1085 only it is the short utility version w/o cab. 1085 is excellent tractor as long as you don't put a 5 btm plow behind it. It's 80 hp so treat it like it is 65 and no problems.
