MF 50 Clutch Not Engaging

My 1961 MF 50 ran fine last week, finished cutting and shut down. Went to start this week and couldn't start until carb was adjusted, still a prob. But bigger prob was the clutch. I engaged 1 High, but then I couldn't stop! Shut off and still couldn't disengage. I didn't recall 'lifting' when I originally shifted, but I opened up trans oil point, lifted shifter and moved gears until it disengaged. Restarted motor (barely)and once in R Low, I couldn't stop again, with clutch fully pressed down. Gear locked, had to open top again? Isn't the upper half supposed to allow gear changing, and the lower end of clutch play to be used for PTO? Any help appreciated. I did note the free play is >1", maybe try a small adjustment? Still need to 'reset' my carb as well.

There should be a cover plate on the bottom of the bell housing that's held on with four bolts. Take that cover off, and look inside. Have someone work the clutch pedal with the engine off, the brakes locked, and or the wheels blocked so it won't roll on you.

HI,
This may help. I have had the same problem)( I think)
Open up where you put the oil in in the tranny. Forward towards the clutch you will see a bigger gear. All the way forwards is either forwards or reverse as all the way back is forwards or reverse. (sliding the gear)
The gear needs to be in the middle and you will have neutral. I used a long snap on pry bar. You will not have to use force or at least I didn't.
The gear should move easy. The reason I use a pry bar is to reach the gear, not to start prying on the gears.
I had this problem and found the answer on the internet. Also use a nice H pattern when shifting.
I also provided a link
hope this helps

Sounds like your clutch is not pulling away from the
disk. Mine did that a couple of times and it ended
up the fingers that connect the disk to the clutch
had broken and did not allow the clutch to dis-
engage. You should be able to see this from the
bottom observation plate.

thanks for the note, opened inspection plate and found a big chuck of metal, so appears will have to split and look closer, maybe time to replace clutch anyway since its been decades, anyone know of where to find service manual?
