MF135 no fuel upper vent

I am bleeding a MF135 and have fuel to the lower vent on the injector pump but no fuel will come from the upper vent. Previous to having to bleed system the tractor just died while using flail mower after about 15 minutes. No warning just quit. Always started and ran good. When turning engine over, fuel will spurt from lower vent but nothing from upper. Can someone suggest what may be going on here?

bleed to lower close; bleed to upper close then try to start sometimes slackening one injector pipe a little helps.
blocked filters is a good thing to think of if pressure from the lift pump is poor-fuel should spurt. there is a gauze mesh filter in the tank on the switch off tap which is often overlooked but is messy.

The lower vent next to the tag is most critical. The top one can be bled after engine is running, it's job is to get the trapped air out of the cover so the governor parts don't rust quickly.

As Fergie Bach has said there is a pencil gauze mounted on top of the tap. Make sure it is there because the tap will block quickly if it is not. Depending on the age and type fitted you may have a glass bowl type lift pump. If so there should be another gauze above the bowl. This blocks frequently. Make sure that the hand lever on the lift pump is giving a good pumping stroke. If it is not, turn the engine slightly until it comes 'off-cam'. Disconnect the outlet pipe at the lift pump and check for a good pumped flow.
Finally remove the upper bleed screw and make sure that the point on the end is in place. It may have broken off and is blocking the vent. If necessary remove the complete vent assembly to vent.

Dieseltech, thank you for the info. That gave me the confidence to crank with battery long enough to start tractor. I was trying to force fuel from top vent before trying. I opened a line on pressure side first and once fuel there I could tell it wanted to start so closed and cranked again. It started. Thanks again.

Fergie, thanks for reply. I did open pressure line while cranking with battery and once fuel came there I closed it and cranked again. It started. Great! Thanks for your help.
