massey harris 50 clutch

Has anyone replaced the clutch in a massey harris 50 or similar massey? Was it a big job? The clutch works except the live part to engage the pto with tractor running.

Depends what you call big. I call it big. Hours of set up to keep both ends off the ground, 5 minutes to split the housing, who knows how long once you see what's going on in there- worn flywheel, busted springs, who knows. If it is just the clutch disc, change the throw out bearing while you are in there, you don't want to do this more than twice a lifetime. It could be done by pros in a few hours, I'd give it a weekend, it once took me 3 days to get the 2 splines back together.
A bunch of 2x4 and 4x4's, atleast one roller jack- on a flat floor or surface, a chevy pick up clutch pilot tool, $3 plastic ones are fine, a friend who atleast did car and truck clutches before...and what no one wants to buy... a manual...

Whenever I split one for a clutch I get the complete clutch kit, and change the whole thing out (it's not worth piecing a clutch together with new, and old parts). With a 2 stage clutch for live pto, the pto clutch plate is contained in the pressure plate. The pressure plate has 3 bolts holding it together, after you install the pressure plate to the flywheel you remove the 3 bolts that was holding the pressure plate together. Note: before un-bolting the old pressure plate from the flywheel install 3 bolts to hold the pressure plate together (so the springs in the pressure plate won't go flying everywhere).

Hi,
I am doing a MF 50, well I have the two halves together and tractor runs, but still putting together getting other things repaired.
I read in the forums if the linkage is a little lose or wore set the pto clutch at about .060 to .070. I set mine about .070 the book has .090

Some clutch kits come with a plastic alignment tool.
Get a manual. Parts book also is a help. Torque wrench is handy. If I remember correctly the clutch to flywheel bolts only go about 18 to 20 foot lbs.
I also used a engine hoist on the front and a rolling floor jack on the back for assembly. Good flat floor as mentioned. Also another person for assembly of the 2 halves.

Its not a small job. I didn't think it was all that bad though.
Planning, proper tools, a place to split the tractor, knowledge or someone to give you a hand.

Been there - done that.

It's not as bad a job as some people feel - IF you have a solid floor and a chain hoist.
