3165 backhoe questions

Hey guys, got a few questions. A neighbor has a 3165 MF backhoe for sale. It has a leaky front seal and no brakes. I mean, NO brakes. He says he always used one of the outriggers to stop.

So before I decide to jump in and buy this thing, how bad of job is it to get working brakes? I just did a little googling and saw something about taking off the wheels??

I can live with the leaky seal for a while, since this would get pretty limited use on the farm. Probably not more than 10 days of the year. But, when your entire farm consists of a mountainside, I think at least semi-working brakes are a necessity!

We are somewhat mechanically inclined here, but removing the back wheels does sound a bit daunting!

Thanks in advance,
Jake

You have a backhoe so you can pick up and then use a shop crane or another loader to lift the wheel. You could even walk the wheel off but it's best to have something to stop it from falling over. Using the outrigger to stop is a really stupid idea unless the guy wanted to be buying new outriggers and cylinders.
