TO35 - one tire will not move

Hello all. My name is Joe and I have a problem with my TO35. One of the back tires will not move. If I put the tractor in gear, the one tire will not move and the other "pulling" tire just spins me in a circle. If I put the tractor in reverse, everything is fine. I can drive it all day in reverse. If the tractor is in neutral, the one tire still will not move. I have checked the brake, and it doesn"t seem to be stuck. I have the I&T shop manual, but I have a limited mechanical skill set. Does anyone have a clue what might be the problem, and could a novice such as myself tackle it? Thanks for any feedback.

Step 1.
Might try jacking that side up.
Put tractor in reverse, see if tire spins, then replete the process in neutral and a forward gear.

It's possible that something in the brake mechanism has come loose inside the brake drum and is locking the wheel from turning forward.

If not then the problem would be in the differential, you know your own mechanical skills if you feel comfortable tearing into unknown territory.

:) Yeah I assumed the tractor shouldn't be running, but I appreciate the clarification. I'm very thankful for the feedback, you guys have pointed me in the right direction. Couldn't work on it today, will try tomorrow.

Hi Joe,
As has been said it does sound like a brake problem. Is there any sign of the wheel turning forwards before it appears to lock? If one or both of the anchor springs had broken or if the spring which runs across the adjuster had broken then you would have a drag on the brakes but not a lock-up. My thought is that one of the brake linungs has broken away from the metal shoe and is jamming between the good shoe and the inner face of the brake brum. This will free itself in reverse but will jam up in the forward direction. Let us know what you find.

Yes, it does appear that the tire tries to move forward before it locks. Thanks so much for your feedback. I should be able to work on it some today. Will let you know

Got a chance to work on the tractor today. I jacked up the tractor and the seized up tire would not spin. I tried it in forward, neutral and reverse, but no go. I was getting ready to take the tire off and decided to try and spin the tire with a little more force. After a few minutes of working it back and forth, the tire broke free. I checked the brake/tire for damage, didn't see anything obvious, so I put the tire back on. I fired her up and she rolls. I drove her around for about 15 minutes, she drove good and the brake worked flawlessly. I have no explanation, but I'm glad it's over. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction, everyone.
