MF 1085 injector pump

Well I did the head gasket and some other stuff on this old
tractor last winter. Its been running fine, good power and cool,
lots of brush cutting and rototilling.

Last week it suddenly felt like it was running out of fuel/
sucking air. I idled back but it stopped. Bled the air out of
filters, two screws on the injector pump, cracked the back
injector and it started up.

Stalled out again yesterday...same procedure and got it going,
but the injector pump is leaking fuel , I assume sucking air here
too...looks like from the top cover? Is there a gasket and oring
kit to get or should i just pull it and have rebuilt?

How much should I expect to pay to have this rebuilt?

Thanks, Grant

There is a seal kit, and it's not that hard to do after you do your first one. I did my first re-seal (it was leaking at the top cover like yours) about 2 years ago, it's still holding, and I've done 5 other since, and I didn't even pull the injector pump off the tractor on 4 of them. If you have good mechanical abilities you should be able to it yourself.

unless it's leaking really bad that's not the problem replace the filters, while there off make sure the fuel is getting to them some of the lift pumps have a strainer in them under the cover that is held in place with a single screw in the center of it, don't know if your has it or not make sure fuel algae or foreign material isn't floating around in the tank blocking the outlet,as for the leak it's a simple fix just don't damage the springs all the parts are is 2 o-rings and a cork gasket

On the filter base top will be a constant bleed fitting going back to the tank return, if it gets plugged any trapped air will go to the injection pump and shut the engine down instead of returning to the tank as it should, is worth a look. Top covers can be resealed on the engine, but I prefer resealing the complete pump, have seen too many times it needed to come off soon after anyway with the head seal or drive hub seal leaks.

Great info guys...I will check that return line, I remember the guy who was helping put everything back together(me) had trouble with the return line to tank.

I will definatly change the filters and check the fuel flow...I dont think the fuel has alge, but I will check - had that in a couple excavators, took a long time to clean out.

As the leak isnt too bad I may put it off until this winter...if I can keep it going.

Thanks, I'll post back with what I find. Grant
