The original subject was "to35 steering".

replaced cover and new rack, all was fine until the other day when the cover broke again. What is happening?

if manual steering box, you may have the gears too tight.
my old TO-35, sometimes going down a blacktop road I have had the front tires start to wobble back and forth.

the gears are worn in the center section where the front tires go straight. if you get the geara tight when tires are going straight, then the gears will be too tight when you turn right/left as the gears are not worn in that area.

I jack the front of the tractor up, turning the steering wheel full left to right, I tighten the gear box about 1/8 of a turn on each adjustment screw, then check for any gear drag.
if you feel any gear drag at either full right or left turn then loosen the gear box.

that is about all you can do.

another thing that is happening is the steering gears are bottoming out before it hits the stops on the spindles the way to fix this is to weld 1/4 key way on the stops on the spindles that will stop the gears from bottoming out you will never notice the differance in the turning radius if you have any questions feel free to call me 740 982 7446 ask for vic

The timing appears correct---3 turns left and right--and the stops appear to hit before the gear bottoms out. Arms are straight down at center. Installed new top and when driving straight out of the barn ( no turns) BAMB!!! broke the top again, any thoughts WTF? Noticed that hydraulic oil in box now. Could its' presence tell me the seal in the piston is bad? Would this conceivably be causal to the top breaking?
