changed fuel filters on a mf240 and next day found the glass bowl broken. replaced the glass bowl and next day found the new bowl shattered. tractor sitting outside in shade and had not been run. tried not to over tighten but that's the only thing i can figure. am i missing something?

Sorry to say this Pete but you probably did. I know they can be fiddly things to do i.e. getting the rubber new rings to seat into the grooves properly ( It is so easy to get that top ring that fits above the filter twisted if you are not careful) to form a good seal but really you don't need to tighten them up that much.

thanks roy. i believe the filter was installed with 2 piece shoulder bolt and nylon wing nut in 1 piece and thus when the bolt on top of filter was tighten it naturally over tightened the bowl. i assume the filter can be installed and then glass bowl attached.

Hi, Roy is correct it is normally overtightening that causes the bowl to shatter. The annoying thing is though that it will not shatter when you are nearby the tractor. Invariably you go away and do something else and come back to find a big fuel leak.

That"s precisely what happened to our 168! I can"t actually remember who the culprit was ( Hand on my heart it was not me ) but the incident made me very careful about the fitting of fuel filters from that day onwards.
