175 Switch Gen/Reg to Alternator

If I buy a 508552M92 alternator (for the newer model 100 series) will the tach drive off of the existing generator fit on the back of it?

Taking out the regulator and doing a little re-wiring is not a problem for me.

I have three 175's that we use a lot and I am tired of fighting with the generator / regulators, especially when using the lights while idling around (which we do a lot).

I left the generator in place and rigged up an alternator on one of them and it works great, but requires an extra belt and is a little cheesey looking even to my not so discerning eyes.

Thanks,
JP.

The tach drive will work on the back of the alternator for the newer models. I did this swap on a 165. It works without issue.

That alternator for the newer models with the tach drive is for an external regulator. I purchased a regulator that plugs in and sits right on the alternator. It actually made it a one wire alternator setup.

I didn't know that the alternator still needed a regulator. I thought that the regulation would be internal to the alt.

A one wire alternator is definitely what I'm looking for.

I bought my alternator from NAPA and the regulator form my local Gen/Alt/Starter guy. He tried to find a case that was threaded for the tach drive and would make me a one wire alt, but they are few and far between. He told me he could take it apart and make it a one wire, but the little regulator was only $10.

We have a really good starter and alternator shop near by. It never occurred to me to take it to them and see what they can do. That is my next step for sure.

Thanks,
JP.
