A problem solved

My 135 diesel had displayed a rough running; crackling sound and lot of smoke at high revs a couple of times. I really thought it was something serious. Like head gasket failure or cracked head or some high pressure fuel related fault.
It only happened about 3 times and only at higher rpms.
Max power was a litle bit down (say 10%) though all the time and I thought more smoke under load than previously.
I found the cause and have fixed it.
Anyone fancy a guess. I"ll post the cause in 24 hours or so.
For information puposes really.

You sir, are right. However I had cleaned filters (oil bath with fresh oil to the right line) regularly and recently. The cause was more devious and difficult to work out.
In fact it was just a lucky chance that I did.!!!
Full solution tomorrow.

Sorry I can never suss out the posting order.

Had that happen to me with my C Case it would run sitting as soon as You would want to pull it would cough. I checked everything I could think of so I let it sit for awhile. Finally one day I was standing there looking at it when I noticed the writing on the oil cleaner and the answer was right in front of my eyes DRAIN AND REFILL OIL CLEANER RESERVOIR DAILY TO LINE WITH USED ENGINE OIL. Turned out I had a crack in the air stack mounting flange and the water came in and over filled the air cleaner-made a new gasket-put on a spare flange and away I went with one twist of the tail. Just goes to show the sun can shine on a dogs a-- every now and then.

Hello,
Interesting problem. From your description it seems like an interuption of airflow or fuel. I would go with air flow to start between the air filter and inlet manifold. Failure of the hose connecting the two is quite common. My initial guess would be that the hose has perished/split and is acting on occasions as a flapper valve in the inlet manifold..........on the other hand......

Dave has it more or less. You are rightly a legend on here and we can"t do without you! Thank you for your time and effort again.

Yes, the hose between the intake manifold and the oil bath air cleaner was collapsing in on itself. But when the engine was not running it regained it"s normal shape. So you had to be off the tractor with the engine running to see it. And to look in the right place!
Air filter always kept clean so not excessive suction due to blockage there.
It is a newish hose (less than 2 years old) but sourced from a well known discount spares supplier. It was a poor fit even initially and I had to slightly modify it! Obviously unsuited to the negative presure; designed for coolant use I would say.

Being a poor small holder I have left it on but reinforced it with a solid tube (in the collapsing section)on the inside for the moment.

Posted it on in case someone has similar problem.
