I am helping a in law with his lift .Works good until clutch is pushed down or motor is shut off, then it would bleed down quickly.I guess we will put a new rubber o-ring on the cylinder and pressure relief valve and new O-rings on stand pipe and the one under cylinder housing.Anything else I am missing? Will also do the adjustments on the 2 fingers and cam . It has the small cylinder in it,the one with one rubber o-ring on it and the 1900 psi relief valve. He's got a lot of clean up to do. 3/4 inch of sludge in bottom.Any suggestions would be helpful.

What is the serial number of the tractor.

As I understand some early model 1956 models were painted with cream colored hood/fenders and green bodies.

They were early production models.

I have a 1957 that was cream and gray. Now it's red and gray, my bad,

guess I am too old and slow to ever paint it back to the original colors.

Before you tear it apart, hook something heavy on the 3ph, take the round cover off where the tranny dipstick is, lift the implement and look in there with a flashlight. You should be able to tell where the leak is. I got into an MF 50 a couple years ago that had a bad o-ring between the cylinder and top cover.

We had the problem with several of these.

Tried rebuilds, relief valve, o-rings, piston rings... Not much difference.

Then - there are three (I think!) machined washers in the control valve chamber. Changed these, and a major improvement.

The systems still leak down - presumably because of the ringed lift piston. One of the few design faults in these old girls.

I've been doing some checking around and found a piston that takes 3 steel rings for the to35 in the 2 1/2 dia cylinder. Will have to do some more checking to be sure it will change out with the old rubber o-ring one. With the rubber o- ring cylinder I read some thing about a back-up rubber o-ring in there.I didn't see any thing but the one o- ring on the piston.What are they talking about?

They make a 2 1/2 inch piston to replace the one with the rubber o-ring,it has 3 steel rings. The back up on the rubber o-ring piston is suppose to have a leather back up on the groove with the rubber. From what I could find out is that most people don't put the leather back on because it is real tight,it should be put in hot water to make it streach out to get it on. This I found out from a older mechanic. For what its worth.

Before you go reinventing the wheel here, there is one size piston on anHF, it has 3 iron rings. It was designed to slowly lower to the ground as a safety feature. Fords were made with o rings and whatever they wanted, and rock shafts stayed up a lot longer, but that is a different machine. If the lever is set to raise, the engine is off, and the implement falls to the ground in 15 or 20 seconds, nothing is wrong, so don't fix it.
