Fix for transmission shifter?

My 202 has the problem of the shifter getting stuck in 1st or reverse and I have just dealt with it by taking the top plug out and moving the gears with a long screwdriver. It happens mostly when I accidentally pull up on the shifter while moving it but on a long day it can happen 4-5 times.

I just noticed there is about 3/8" of up and down free play where the pin goes through at the base. If I remove the pin will all h*ll brake loose? I was thinking maybe I could eliminate some of the movement and keep the shifter from coming upwards and dislocating.

Changing out that pin shouldn't be a problem but I
doubt it will fix your problem. My 65 will do that
once in awhile but its usually from the kids speed
shifting it.

My 65 does that occasionally. I find it''s less likely if I keep the lube topped up, shift slowly, and never pull up on the shifter when changing gears.

not that familiar with 202 but most mf that size have a spring under the shift lever to hold it down it could be broken, but to solve the problem your having I've had to replaced the shift rail stop bar on 2 of our tractors that wore thru after years of the shift rail hitting against it, only replaced 1 spring retainer on another mans 135,bad part is to replace the rail stop the trans. has to be separated at the rear end joint the spring is not to bad depending on how the trans. top cover is mounted
