Massey F40 / 50 Power Assisted Steering

Hi - I have a 1956 Massey F40 with the power steering option. My pump works great but the control valve and main cylinder leak badly. I bought the rebuild kit for these and am working on rebuilding to fix the leaks. My question is about replacing this part. It seems that the cylinder assembly is part# 183074M91(Bruning), and the control valve is part#183073M91(Saginaw). I know there is a replacement for this for the '57 model which is part# 184871M92(Benton) and has the control valve and cylinder assembly all in one. So, is the Benton a direct replacement for the Bruning+Saginaw assemblies? They look like a direct fit looking at the agco parts books.

Also, does anyone know of a proper power steering upgrade for this (i.e. not power-assisted, but full power-steering). The adjustment on the power assist is VERY touchy. Just curious if there's better options out there.

Thanks a million!
Alan

Manual or power assist is your only choice. Dealer I worked for sold 50 and 65 models all with power steering, telling the buyers who didn't want it he would remove it and go back to manual if they didn't like it after one month use. He never took any off.

Most critical parts to maintain on this design is keeping tight pins and link ends that operate the control valve, loose parts are impossible to get the power assist to work right without excessive steering play.

I have 2 Benton cylinders with the 4 external bolts. One came with the newer stile pump and the other has the old.On these 2 Bentons the supply lines are not interchangeable. The thread sizes are different. How much for the rebuild kit?

I paid $65 for it but now that i'm looking at it, it doesn't seem to be the right set of seals. the piston takes 2 big o-rings on the outside and i'm not seeing anything that matches that in the kit. I may take this back to my parts guy and make sure its right. based on my research online it doesn't seem to be the correct kit.

BTW - for some reason the pin holding the rod to the support bracket was _impossible_ to get off. took me 5 hours to figure it out - had to drill through the center and grind it down and even had to build a custom punch to get it out. The thing was baked in there and did not want to come out. Now that its out i can rebuild everything - once i'm sure i have the correct kit.

I dont mind (yet) if the adjustment isn't 100% on the steering - i just really need to fix the leak on the control valve and main cylinder. I can fiddle with the adjustment once i get everything back together.

Thanks for the tip about the tight links. I'll make sure to use new pins when i put everything back.
