hydrostatic steering on 180

Having trouble with the steering on my 180. I think I have it narrowed down to the hydrostatic steering pump, also called a hand pump in my manual. I talked to a mechanic friend today and he said they never had much luck repairing them at the dealership, so they just replaced them when they went bad. The trouble with that is they are $905 from AGCO. Does anyone have a better alternative? Thanks for any advice.

I tackled this same problem with mine last winter. You probably have an early production model that has the Saginaw brand hydromotor. I attempted to rebuild mine all new seals and Orings...would put it back together and it would be stuck either turning to the right or left....finally got frustrated took my box of parts to one of the oldest massey dealerships in central Illinois and a veteran 35 year massey mechanic laughed at me and said I always wondered what the inside of one of those pumps looked like...he said exactly what you have already experienced...throw it in the scrap bin and get a Charlynn which is what most other tractors use as a steering pump. I found one out of a salvage yard and adapted it over...mine actually came out of a 970 j I case. I took some measurements and knew what I needed for hydraulic connections headed for a tractor salvage...and just modified it to work in my tractor....I can coach you thru it....stay in touch.

I did the same as muduc, adapted a later model Charlynn and replaced all hoses as well as the steering wheel, I did loose my tilt function, but at least I can steer the tractor, you might also have to replace the pump also, it seems they usually go out about the same time. Johnny

Thanks for the good advice. I really appreciate it. My 180 is a 1967 and came with the Char-Lynn steering pump. I meant to put that in my original post, but forgot. Do the Char-Lynn pumps act the same as the Saginaw units when they go bad? Thanks again for the help.

The 1965 180 we have has had that issue for years. First I rebuilt the pump, then later the "hand pump" Now the seal leaks fluid from above the axel, so that's next for me. Anyone out there had that leak? Great tractor, but steering system leaves something to be desired. I have a steering wheel, and charlin motor assembly from a massey combine that I have saved for just in case situation gets worse.
