Massey 250 PTO Grind when Engage -- Adjust?

Hi there -- we have a Massey 250 that is grinding when we attempt to put it into gear. I'm guessing this should have a 2 stage clutch -- pedal fully depressed = no power to wheels, pedal part-way depressed = disengage pto, no pressure on pedal = both power to wheels and pto. Does this sound right?

I think I need to adjust a pedal, or something. What should I do here?

Thanks - Nate

Yes to two stage clutch.

IF you have the clutch all the way to the floor the second stage is "out" and the PTO can be shifted into gear. First stage just cuts traction, second stage is traction AND PTO stop.

Keep in mind the PTO is NOT syncronized and some gear clash can occur even when clutch down and PTO shaft not moving.

I ran a 250 for a while and have a 240 now. Both would have slight gear clash when putting PTO in gear no matter what.

So question is: Is the grinding really bad for several seconds, or just momentary?

The grinding is bad enough that we can't engage the pto lever with the clutch pedal all the way down. Clutch pedal all the way down 1st, engine running, try to move pto lever from out-of-gear to in gear and experience too much grinding so that it won't go into gear.

Don't know about a Massey but I do know on an Oliver or a David Brown with a 2 stage clutch there is an internal adjustment that needs to be made. You also have to have your free travel for your clutch set to the correct dimensions. Questions? You will need a feeler gauge to check it. Do you have an operators manual?

Ok it can't hurt to try to adjust the clutch, right? If we adjust it into the factory specifications, and the PTO still won't engage with engine running, apparently it needs a new clutch.

I have many I&T manuals, 165/75...255/65/75...202/03...but not a manual for a 250. It sounds like I need to find a service manual for this tractor.

What I need to know:
1- Free Travel Specification & How to Adjust
2- Pressure Plate Travel Specification & How to Adjust

Thanks,
Nate

Good news! We adjusted the free travel on the clutch pedal to the correct 7/16" spec, and now the 2 stage clutch is working just fine.

Hello, I came across this thread when searching for this exact problem in my MF 250 I am having now. RedBarnNate, if you're still out there, can you explain how you adjusted this to achieve the required results? (or anyone else, for that matter)
