180 steering problem.

While mowing with my 180 today the steering all of a sudden would not turn to the right. This does not happen all the time and there is no warning when it will happen. If I turn the wheel slightly to the left then it will turn right normally. Has anybody seen this happen before on the hydrostatic steering systems? Thanks for your insight.

Yes, it's probably not the hydraulic part, but the column needle bearings going out and binding up on each other. Will act like a one way roller clutch. If you can get some lube down past the top you may get it working awhile longer, but plan on 2 bearings and a shaft. Some had a plug on top that a grease fitting could be put in, I think dad's 1100 has a fitting in it he shoots grease in.

Thanks for the reply Dieseltech. I'm thinking it is not a bearing issue as the steering wheel turns easily in both directions. When not turning to the right the steering wheel turns freely but the front wheels do not turn, bump it to the left briefly and it turns right normally. Seems more like a sticking valve maybe. I appreciate your thoughts on this problem.

Which steering unit does it have, early models used the Saginaw, while the late models had Charlyn. Some Olivers had the Saginaw too that had spline trouble with high hours use.

Thanks for the reply Dieseltech. Not sure how to tell the difference in the steering unit, but the serial number is 9A 18050 making it a 1967 tractor if that helps to identify. Again, I appreciate your insight.
