MF model 3 Baler

Howdy ya'll. I'm looking at buying a
Massey model 3 hay baler from a neighbor,
and was wondering if anybody had any words
of advice. Every thing seems real tight
and works well spinning the flywheel by
hand. It had an engine at one point, but
I'd like to convert it to pto. Are they
easy enough to come by?

Never saw one with a gas engine around here, but know they were made. Dad had a #3 years ago, you might want to check the knife clearance and the plunger runners for wear, and condition of all the drive chains.

Drive chains are in great shape. No slop in any joint, back lash in drive gears does not seem too extreme. Even the knotter seems to be in decent shape. The plunger has been disconnected though. I'm going to check today if it's seized or not.

We had a number 3 years ago. Nice baler but very small. Hope your windrows aren't very big. We upgraded to a number 10 later on which had a much wider pickup. If you're a little handy you should be able to make a pto from a different implement work if you can't find a donor #3. Good luck!
