Massey 50e shuttle shift won't engage sometimes

Sometimes when I start tractor and engage forward or reverse automatic shuttle shift lever nothing happens. Sometimes I will jerk the loader bucket to move the tractor and then it engages, and will work fine there after. Only when tractor sits for a while is there an issue. Manual says could be low oil and the same oil is used in rear axle. However, nowhere can I find where to check or add oil, and of course manual doesn"t say anything there. Help. I wish these manuals were a bit better. If you have ideas can you tell me where to look for location to change filter or check oil that would be appreciated. I"ve looked at rear axle and don"t see anthing. I love this tractor otherwise. Thanks, Kurt

If it's the same as our 40, the oil level can be checked by a dipstick found behind your right heel when seated on the tractor. The filter on our 40 is up under the dash, left side, at the back of the fuel tank. It's in the line to/from the oil cooler. The filler on ours is a big round plug to the left of the 2 shifters. Hope this helps.

(quoted from post at 11:09:40 06/12/14) Thank you, I will look into that. I have a cab with a floor so maybe it"s under the floor. Kurt

It was really low on transmission fluid. I filled it up and still it won't go into drive. Is it possible the forward and reverse solinoids or something are not working when I move the lever?

Did you figure out the problem? I am having the same issue and replaced the solenoid with no luck. Oil is ok. No steering or Forward/Reverse.
