Hello all

My 135 starter is not engaging, I only hear a click, via key or when I apply direct current to the small terminal on the solenoid.

I suspect it may be the solenoid.

Can the more knowledgable on this forum please reply

Regards
Don

Hi Don,
In NSW you will probably have a Lucas starter fitted. If you are happy that all connections are good then it will probably be the solenoid which is faulty. Before removing the starter, turn the engine slightly by hand and try the starter again. This should release the pinion if its stuck in engagement. If it is a Lucas starter the solenoid can be replaced as a complete unit or the black cap can be replaced on its own. To replace the cap only you will require a soldering iron as it is necessary to solder a wire from the solenoid windings which protrudes through the face of the cap. It is advisable to replace the complete unit but the cap is a cheaper option.
With the starter removed connect jumper leads to the solenoid battery terminal and to the starter body. Either bridge to the small solenoid terminal with a screwdriver or similar or a seperate wire. The 'click' should still be there if it is the solenoid.

Let us know how you get on.

Hi David

Removed starter & tested on bench soleniod engaged, smoke noticed from rear of starter, still smoking after power removed.
I took unit to an auto electrican, who claims fields are shot, so it appears I require a new starter.
Any other advice is welcome

Hi Don,
An auto electrician is ok but is he? familiar with repairs to starters etc? If it is smoking then it may well be the coils but could be any other component.
Replacement field coils should be available especially if its a Lucas. Only problem is by the time you start adding parts, postage and labour it might be cheaper to have a new one. My main supplier Bence (Bepco) supply the Iskra range of electrical items but there are probably plenty of alternatives around.

Hi David

Yes it is a Lucas M45G 26220A starter motor.

I've googled spare parts etc, plenty in England but as you say parts + freight, that would replace coils, but what else would I need to replace.
A new starter will cost 310.00 Au
Do you have a spare starter and plan a trip overseas soon ?? (lol)

Hi Don, Depending whether your lucky angel is on the job, it may just be a stuck brush overheating / arcing and warming up all the accumulated muck. Depends on whether any serious damage done to the commutator. If you email me direct I"ll try and send you a worksheet if you fancy taking the job on yourself, Set of brushes wouldn"t cost much if that was all that was needed.
