I'm looking at buying a 1959 MF 65 tractor (according to the serial number), but I'm a little confused on the engine. The 65 is listed to have either a Perkins A4.192, or A4.203, and from what I can find is that it probably has the A4.192. Is the 192, or is the 203 the better engine, and which one is prone to more problems. The tractor will be mainly for light duty work, and some shredding on the weekends.

I would bet you're looking at the 203 engine, I don't believe the 192 was used in the US. The 203 is an excellent motor. I have three diesel 65s. Great small tractors.

Best way to check is by the serial number. Probably on a machined pad on the block, just below the exhaust manifold. If the number starts with '25 .....', its a 192, If it starts '26.....' its a 203.
Hope that helps

I have a '58 English with a 192. Great motor. Had new sleeves put in it a few years ago, no trouble finding parts. I hear it was the same Perky they used in military Jeeps, but haven't confirmed.

The MK1 65 with the 192 engine is easily recognised by the wedge
shape piece bolted into the rear of the sump.......Sam

Thanks for the reply's everyone, it has the 192 engine (it has the wedge bolted to the rear of the sump). Even though the engine, and trans oil looked ok for a tractor that has sat for a few years the engine had been run for quite awhile without the bottom of the oil bath air cleaner. The oil in the right rear planetary was brown, had to put oil left rear planetary after half a quart about 12oz of water came out before the brown oil started to come out. So in all I passed on the tractor, it would be a good parts tractor, that's about it.

Thanks for the info everyone.
