I need help. My rotating cylinder was leaking badly. I have removed it and found the cylinder badly scored by the dowel pins on the shaft. See photo. My question is about the dowel pins. What do they do and are the inserted right way round. It makes no sense to me as if I put them back the same way they will score the cylinder again. By the way iwas looking at wwwabbits thread. It took 20 mins to remove the cylinder and an hour to break it down in the garage. Much easier than I thought. However I am now at a standstill because of the pins. Can anybody help

Hello,
The dowel pins are designed to correctly locate the "paddle" onto the shaft. The cap screws are then tightened down to lock it there.
The dowels are fitted with the threaded section protruding, so as a hex nut can be used to extract them from the shaft on disassembly.
If your dowels have worked their way out of the shaft, they may need replacing, but check the condition of the bores in the shaft as well.
Normally, these dowels are fitted into position by screwing on a nut flush with the top of threaded section and driving them in with a brass hammer. If they tap in easily, they could work their way out as in your case. Loctite may be advantageous, if they are not too worn.
The cylinder is cast steel, not iron, and can be built up with mild steel electrodes and then turned down to size. Also check that there is no excessive clearance between the shaft and the top and bottom housings and always fit new shaft "o" rings.
