Need help with identifying a model 44. The guy says its a 44 special but the tag say 44GR serial # 12687. In the serial # section it has a high altitude which has a GRA. I'm trying to figure out which tractor it is. Is there a number on the block to tell the size? I didn't see any number on the block. Thanks for the help. Ed
 
There are several diverences between a 44 and a 44 Special.I think 44 Special will have a serial # starting with 50001. They should have a little guide around the gear shift to help find the gears, the gas Sspecials should have a 277 cubic engine where the 44 had a 260 cubic engine. The throttle is back up on the steering colume (late 44's are this way also). Most Specials have cast front wheels but not all of them. There should be a metal tag riveted on side of frame with the serial number, also the number is stamped on transmission housing under clutch pedal. There is also a diverence in the hyd with Special Having a quadrant type hyd lever.
 
Late model 44's can have cast wheels and live PTO, I think specials have the position control on the lift.

Serial number is best, go off transmission casting.
 
The 44 specials serial number plate will begin with 44G1SP 5xxxx. The book also says the engine ID is stamped in a flat spot on the upper right hand side of the block, just above the governor rod (MHA277G). Although my 44SP does not have this.
 
The engine model and serial will be stamped in the upper right side of block directly under the head and towards the rear of motor. Will be either H260 or H277. If it is stamped 277 it is most likely a special although that is not always the case. The 260s were straight up 44s. But there are some oddities out there. We have one with what appears to be a special rear end with live power and disc brakes with the h 260 motor in it. The stamping on the trans would be most accurate.
