Hi,
I figure many of you have used Permatex® Copper Spray-A-Gasket® Hi-Temp Sealant or a similar product when replacing head gaskets. I"m replacing the head gasket on a Perkins AD3-152. The Permatex can has limited instructions that are fairly straight forward with the exception of telling you how long to wait before assembly? Here is what"s on the can,"Shake well with repeated agitation. Hold can 6-10 inches away from surface, depending on width of target area. All surfaces can be pre-coated in advance for convenience. Apply to flange surfaces, both sides of gasket and bolt threads. Wait 30 seconds between coats to allow surface to become tacky.". I"m wondering how long you guys typically wait after applying the copper coat to assemble and torque the head? Are we talking right away or waiting a couple hours so it dries first? Any advice is appreciated.

C3, hopefully other guys with more experience than I have will weigh in, but I applied 3-4 coats to the head gasket, and waited probably 30 minutes before installing/torquing, on a Ferguson TO-20/Continental Z120 Gas.

It was still "tacky", but the gasket wasn't any problem to handle.

FYI: I had to remove the head and head gasket a short time later (Long story. I hadn't run the engine yet.), and I didn't have any trouble removing the head. There was a little coppery-stuff on the head and block, but it cleaned up easily, so I could install the new gasket.

I did pretty much the same thing when I reinstalled the head the second time.

I also used the spray on the manifold gasket when I installed the manifold.

(I still haven't run the engine.)

Put 4 or 5 lite coats on each side of the new head gasket and wait 5 - 10 minutes between coats. It will build up a good even layer of coating. Keep in mind which side of the gasket says this side up for later. Add more if you don"t see it covering completely. Let the gasket dry until it"s tacky not wet (30 min at least). I left mine overnight and it was still tacky the next day. Clean the block and head surfaces thoroughly using acetone or paint thinner used for automotive or tractor paints. Assemble and torgue to spec. I did this on a Perkins 3 Cyl. in our MF 205. No leaks.

I don't think theres a waiting period for install just spray and torque. I would think the manufacturer would state to wait.

I've used permatex copper spray gasket adhesive on Massey 1135 head gaskets many times! It's a great product and would recommend it to anyone. 4-5 light coats and wait 15 minutes and install. Make sure after u install head to run til operating temperature then retorque head. Good luck
