Loud ticking on newly rebuilt engine

I just did an out of frame complete overhaul back at the house. Ran the engine off an on for a total of about 3 to 4 hours while fixing other items on the tractor (steering, hydraulics, etc). Re-torqued head, checked valve lash and decided everything was good to go.
I hauled it out to the farm to put it to work. Got it out there late and ran it around the fields under no load on a joyride. I went home that night and convinced myself I should change the oil before I put it to work. (it had Castrol GTX 10W-30 and Lucas Zinc additive).
I arrived at the farm and drained oil and put in NAPA 15W-40 and new filter.

I plowed two rows and a loud ticking started (a little more often that one a second). Simultaneously it started running a little rough. I shut it down (it didn't run more than 10 seconds after the ticking).
I pulled the valave cover and checked the valve rods, nothing bent. I didn't have a feeler guear to check the lash.

Anybody got any ideas what is going on? I am afraid to start it back up.

I would suspect that maybe a bearing cap came loose? However that may not account for the rough running.

Turn engine over and visually look to see if there are any obvious out of adjusted vales.(as in to much obvious clearance or no clearance)If all looks good start engine. If there is no ticking try operating tractor under load. If engine has tick or develops tick crack individual fuel lines to each injector and see if noise subsides when fuel is diverted from each individual fuel injector. If tick stops when you bleed off fuel to each fuel injector one at a time, then you know which cylinder the problem is associated with.

Worth maybe slacking injector pipes one at a time to find out which cylinder(if it is just one)it is. might be be sticking or dirty injector. Just a thought before you go digging deep.

Having rebuilt many engines I would check the valve lash carefully. I have a tendency to have that problem on 855 Cummins. Start it up let it warm up good and it starts ticking after about 30 min. Run the overhead again and problem solved. Have never had and negative results of this. I suspect it has to do with hydraulic lifters. Unsure if a 285 had them but I would assume it does.
