Hydraulic Pump question

whats the difference between the pumps that pump 4 gpm vs 20gpm? I"m guessing you get a quicker response for your bucket or back blade. I have a 8gm pump on my pto hydraulic pump that runs front bucket, but its slow. what is the recommended gpm?

5 times faster but uses a lot more H.P. and needs a larger reservoir. What tractor and what size cylinders? Most pumps are rated at a specific RPM. Your 8 GPM pump is probably at full throttle so at idle might only be 3 GPM. I think around 12 GPM would be a good size for a farm loader. Industrial's would use about a 17 GPM pump but that's pretty fast for a farm loader.

Pressure multiplied times flow divided by 1714 equals horsepower required to run that pressure at that flow 8x2500./.1714=11.66hp
