Anyone want to take a guess as to why I can put my MF65 PTO into ground speed just fine but not into 540PTO speed? It's like the pto clutch parts won't disengage. Stuck clutch?

Sounds like your PTO clutch is in need of some adjustment or is shot. Does it grind away when you try to engage it? Can you engage it and then start the tractor?

Yup it will engage fine when the engine is off. Grinds trying to put in gear with engine running and stepping down on clutch. I'm just fishing for places to start looking. Worked absolutely fine till now, no signs of trouble at all. With all the mud and dirt on it something simple could be gummed up. Of course with this sunny, warm weather we're having (NOT!) I'm real anxious to lay in the mud looking for problems.

I'm afraid you might have to get in the mud and have a look up through the four bolt inspection plate and see if the clutch is disengaging. There must be a rock you can park on top of over there in Macomb somewhere!

My PTO grinds if the engine RPM is a little higher than a very slow idle. Has your idle speed increased for some reason?

Well, I employed my usual repair method of letting it sit for a couple days, giving me a chance to ponder and the PTO a chance to repent and fly right. Must be it worked because the PTO goes into gear with no problem now.

Another successful "fix" using the wait and see method!
