My 1949 MH44 RC is leaking oil out of both rear axle shafts. What is required to fix seals? Do you remove rear tires and wheels first? I attached a pic showing right rear axle shaft covered in grease.

That is a he&& of a job to do. I would pump the grease zerks full of thick grease and see if that fixes it. You might end up putting 1/2 tube per side in.

If you want to go further, you need to pull the hubs, take the axle caps off and change seals and felt.

The job is getting the hubs off the axles, they tend to really get stuck.

I have found 140 wt rear end grease will help, also I read on this site to fill about two inches below site hole will slow leaks. I found pumping grease does provide a short term fix. Wheel bearing grease is best. The best fix is to change the seals. It looks like your wheel studs are facing out so your wheel can be removed from the hub, makes the job easier in that puller can be used on the hub. I would loosen hub bolts and drive the tractor a short distance, engage the brakes a few times, this will help break the hold the hub has on the axle. Then block up one side of tractor, remove wheel and use the biggest puller you can find. I have one that was used in a cotton gin, so after a few forceful turns and hammer blows to the turn screw was all it took. At any rate this tends to be a two man job, the wheels are heavy more so if the tires are loaded.

I have heard of folks using 20-50 ton presses to get them off.

You will never get them loose pounding.

The 140W and a little low sounds good.
