MF 65 ignition problem

Hello, I have a 1965 gas MF model 65. I turn the ignition key and push the starter button and nothing... I put a trickle charger on the battery (which is new) and it was still dead. No movement of the battery gauge. No clicking or other sounds. I am thinking it needs a new ignition switch but wanted to see what other ideas you guys might have. Thanks for any help.

If not in neutral the neutral safety switch will prevent it from turning over. Could also be a bad neutral safety switch. I think the switch is under the gas tank between the engine and gauges. You could try testing for power at the switch. Was it running previously and now won"t turn over? You can test the cells on the battery to see if it"s bad.

I has been starting fine until this episode. It is in neutral but not sure if the neutral switch is bad? How do you test for power at the switch? Thank you for your reply.

Check switch with a curcuit tester. first position open, opposite position closed or vice versa.

In one poition the current will flow thru the switch to the starter, in the other position the flow of current is broken by the action of the switch...no current to starter.

My 65 has an original switch too, turn it too far, it won't start, that seems to be for 'lights while engine off ' position.
Clip the two wires at the neutral switch together- be certain the levers are both in neutral or you may run over yourself...
