perkins overhaul costs

Heard of 3 different farmers here scraping out thier tractors due to perkins engines failing all 3 said the cost of the overhaul was more then the tractor was worth.they were quoted between $5000.OO TO $6000.00 for rebuilds.Seams high to me any thoughts$

I don't know what model you are talking about but the 3 & 4 cylinders I have done were less than 1/4 of that for all parts and machine shop work. I did the labor. I suspect they are getting quotes from dealers.

Well now that CAT owns the patents and rights to Perkins, CAT will make whatever parts THEY want to, and ask whatever THEY want to charge. Cat must 'allow' anyone else to make aftermarkets. Many non Cat parts will most likely be grey market, Cat will certainly sue the businesses making these parts. In hindsight, MF selling Perkins might turn into a very bad thing on our end.
For instance, when Continental closed up, the family let the world reproduce whatever parts there is a market for, just to keep the famous name going I suppose. I believe the old fashioned word for this was 'goodwill'?
Cat doesn't give it's old ball caps to the Goodwill.... not right now anyway.

I can sell an overhaul kit for £165....and it is made in the same factory as the 'genuwhine' Perkins! BUT I can only get a limited number in my suitcase!.........

Hi I did a 3 cyl 2 winters ago for a customer was $5000 for parts machine shop and my time and $500 or so for new clutch and other odd parts, that was dragged in the shop and driven out. Had new crank, complete head work, new connecting rod, block checked and re assembled with new parts as needed.
Block was totally bare when I started putting it back together. Biggest problem with cost is getting the sleeves out if they have to be bored out, if they wont budge in a press or with a puller, and getting the new ones in right without breaking them. I got lucky with this one, if machine shop had to do it was gonna be another $700 on top.
yes it could be expensive my shop rates $45 an hour.
Regards Robert

Never had to machine any Perkins block, nor have I ever needed a machine shop to remove the sleeves....not when I have an arc welder! This has to be the simplest way to remove sleeves, simply run a few quick splatters of weld up the bore and wait until it contracts, then pulll them out. Youn guys are getting well ripped on Perkins parts....sounds like I should be exporting??????

Hi Sam
The problem is the Dollar to pound conversion it is near $2 Canadian to A U.K pound right now, and the cost of shipping anything weighing more than 3 small feathers in an envelope with a stamp on.

Tried finding out about shipping 2 top arms from a guy on ebay for my fordson E27N hydraulics. it was gonna be $180 plus purchase and a whole load of taxes for less than 8 kg weight.
So yes we pretty well get bent over the desk and have to smile at the queens picture, for anything useful this side.

Our machine shop rates are heading for $100 an hour for the stuff that goes out round here. I have heard of guys welding sleeves but never done it.
I can't afford the customers new block if i stuff it up burning through the thin sleeves. My motor guy won't even try that with any he gets.
He has seen a few get messed up brought to him to try fix after the fact, he had one there when he speced my block, that was messed up that he showed me. If in doubt leave well alone is what he said. it took me quite a while to pull these sleeves they would hardly move.
if you are that lucky carry on doing it that way. I'm not even gonna try it here, way to much money involved if it goes south.
Regards Robert
