How Do I Identify Which Engine is in My 1959 MF85?

I have just purchased a 1959 M-F 85 (s/n 803762), and am not sure about which engine it has: E-223 or E-242?

I know it is a 4 cylinder Continental gas, but do not know what markings to look for in determining which engine. Can you help?

Does the tractor serial number offer any help--beyond year manufactured?

If someone will tell me what markings to look for, I will check them. The tractor will not be delivered for a few days, but I may be able to solicit info from former owner. He thinks it is a 242,
but not certain.

there should be an engine tag just to the left side and below the manifold. i have a 1959 85 w/ a 223 engine. yours is about 2000 hire than mine so it might be possible its a 242. without that tag it may be hard to tell unless you start to measure pistons they are bigger in the 242. most times it is covered w/ grease and oil, its about business card size. good luck
