I am replacing the clutch on my massey 135. Perkins gas, No multipower or two stage clutch. My questions is There is two pressure plates listed for the 10 1/2 inch single clutch. one has 10 splines and the other 25 splines. the 25 spline is $80 more than the 10. These splines appear to not serve any function on my tractor. I have the 25 currently. would a 10 spline work for me? the input shaft goes into the clutch disc and I cant see any relation to the splines on the Pressure Plate.

Hi,
US clutch units are slightly different to the UK ones. Only one plate is listed for petrol single clutch tractors.... 1889 638M1. Only one cover is shown also 1850 837M91.

My understanding is that MF changed to the larger number of splines due to wear taking place in the 10-spline plates which led to difficulties with disengagement. Most tractors from the 500 series onwards have 21 spline plates or a mixture of the two. MF would not offer two options if it was not necessary. If you can prove that the attachment is exactly the same then one might be a economy version. If not you might find that the layout of the bolt holes might be different.
It would be advisable to stay with the correct one.
