Massey 30 carb

My Massey 30 always ran great and would start if the battery could turn it over a couple times no matter how long it had been sitting. The power company was repacing some poles a couple weeks ago and had the electricity shut off, so I fired up my 30 that was hooked to my generator and it was purring along. Then it started run poorly and was belching lots of black smoke, so I shut it down. It was flooding, so when I took the air cleaner hose off, gas ran out. I took the Marvel Schrebler TSX308 carb off and opened it up. The float had a sloshing sound when I shook it, so I ordered a new float and carb kit. I soaked the carb in carb cleaner and blew it out. The directions said to set the float 1/4" from the gasket surface which I did. I put it back together with a new needle and seat, gaskets etc. When I put it on the tractor and turned the gas on, it filled up, then started leaking gas out of the air intake. I assume the float is too high and not shuting the gas off, but it is set correctly and with a new float it is doing the same thing as with the old one, so that makes me think I am missing something. I would appreciate any help you can give me. Thanks!!

I have had some carbs do that and end up resetting the floats to 5/16 to get them to work like I wanted. Also make sure the needle valve gasket is in good shape and tightly sealed. Have seen carbs slowly overfill due to the gasket leaking, and float valve working as it should.

make sure the new float isn't rubbing the sides of bowl, if needle is stuck then tapping on side of carb may release it.

Thanks, I set the float at 5/16" and it runs fine, no leaks. The owner's manual and the carb kit instructions both say 1/4", but what do they know?
