New guy with a to-35 question

Hey everyone, I'm new here to the site and fairly new to the older tractor world. My dad recently purchased a Massey Harris Ferguson to-35 and we aren't really sure of how the lift on this tractor is supposed to work. We're afraid that the lift isn't working correctly. My dad used to have a MF 65 several years ago but he can't really remember how its supposed to work and I was too young to really pay enough attention as to how its supposed to work.

The draft controls when pushed down actually raises the lift and when you pull them up, the lift lowers. The position control lever doesn't seem to work at all or do anything. The previous owner stated everything worked fine and they had used the tractor recently to bush hog a field. Which I understand we just have to take their words for what they are, but we aren't sure if we are doing something wrong or not. I'm hoping that you guys can give me an idea of what to do, where to start with the problems if we do have problems. Any help is appreciated! Thanks ahead of time

For normal operation, leave the draft lever somewhere in the middle. If you push it all the way down I think it will lift.......not 100% on that. I could check mine tomorrow but I have the throttle rod out of it right now.
If the draft control is somewhere around the middle, pulling up on the position control should lift and pushing it down should drop the lift.
There is but one actual valve that does all the work. The position control and draft control play off against each other and use input from the top link to control depth when using a ground engaging implement. The valve is part of the hydraulic pump and the whole lift assembly must be properly adjusted as per the manufacturers specs in order to work properly. Does the tractor have a control valve for remote hydraulics by chance? If so it would be just in front of the seat on the right side when sitting in the seat. Just below where your thigh would normally be.

As far as I can remember it just has an access cover in that position. I checked the oil level and it was full with good looking oil. I have tried playing with the draft controls but there seems to be no position in which it will not affect the lift. Every position I put it in it makes the lift raise or lower. And the position lever will not do anything. My dad has a friend who is really good with these tractors and we are going to try to see him tomorrow and explain the situation so maybe he can give us some insight as well

as Inno said:

on my 1957 TO-35 (picture insert)you leave the draft control handle in the center,
you use the larger longer lever to raise and lower the implement.

when plowing I only move the draft control lever a small amount up or down from center to control the plow depth. otherwise I never use it to raise or lower the lift.

check the fluid level of the transmission/hyd sump and be sure you have it up to par.

I use GL-1 oil in my tractor transmission/hyd sump, but there are other oils that will work.

That was the oil of choice back in the 50th's.

Good luck with your tractor,
what year is your tractor, add a picture.

When the problem is solved, please let let us know
what corrected the problem.

I can always learn a new trick about these old
tractors.

Does the lift act up even when you have a load like
a plow or boom pole with some weight?

We haven't tried putting a load on it yet. I know that they do act differently with a load sometimes. I'll be glad to share what the solution is when we find it

well guys i haven't had a chance to actually tear into anything but after talking with my dads friend I have an idea what may be the problem. Dad's friend showed us what the valve looks like and how the linkage hooks onto it and we have decided its very likely that the position lever linkage has come loose from the valve. I hope that is all that it is but I won't be able to get around to looking at it for a while yet. I appreciate your input and help. I will update once I find out for sure.

The control lever doesn't really fit into anything, it just has to be in front of the control lever of the pump. If you take the side cover off the right side, with a mirror and flashlight you should be able to see if the levers are in the correct position. You'd have to drain some of the oil out before removing the cover.
