Massey 65 Air filter question

I have looked in the manual and can find any info as to whether the air filter housing comes apart. I have it out of the tractor and separated from the oil bath housing but, the steel filter inside is crumbling. I tried to separate it at the top but don't want to put too much pressure on it. Question is.... does it even come apart??
Thanks in advance.

Yes, it does. There should be three clips holding the two halves of the canister together. Remove those, and the frame that holds the metal mesh filter element pulls out of the bottom half.

I don't see any clips.... it looks like the frame on bottom is "pinged" or "punched" together with the canister holding them together.

are you sure it's crumbling, the filter material is some type fine mesh

the air filter on my old TO-35, 1957 model, was very dirty,

I took it off the tractor and soaked it in a 5 gal bucket of kerosene for about 10 hrs, kerosene was very dirty.

then I rinsed it in clean kerosene until the kerosene ran out clean.

let it drip dry for another 10 hrs or so.

the filter material looked very clean

worked fine.

we have had the old tractor since new and I could never remember the filter tower being cleaned. It should have been cleaned 20 years ago.

I once attempted to change the steel mesh in my 65. I saw no
evidence of clips either.

The frame that holds the mesh up in the canister was spot
welded to the canister. It looked to me like my only option would
be to drill through the canister at each spot weld location to
remove the support frame. Then I guess I would have brazed the
frame back in place.

mine was spot welded, broke the welds and pulled it apart

air tube was off and stinking mice had lived inside there, upper 1/3 part of the mesh turned to pile of rust

uncoiled the mesh, shook out the debris and rewound it, getting it back in was difficult but do-able

re-assembled bottom and it held together on its own, did not weld it
